CompasstoConnect.ca An IRCC funded website that connects newcomers with service providers across Peel and Halton

Futures in Digital Health Careers (DHC): Connecting Internationally Trained Healthcare & IT Professionals to the Canadian Labour Market

The Futures in Digital Health Careers (DHC) program is specifically geared towards connecting internationally-trained healthcare and IT professionals to the Canadian labour market. Recognizing the challenge in having to begin ones training and certification anew in Canada, the DHC program offers tailored support and comprehensive information about the current digital health informatics sector to experienced clients. The program aims to support eligible professionals to find alternative careers paths that best suit their existing skills and strengths to the digital health job market in Canada.

Since 2018, the program has successfully delivered 9 cohorts, resulting in approximately 100 clients who have completed the program. DHC has consistently covered relevant topics around resume writing, labour market research, tailored interview approaches, leveraging LinkedIn, and networking tips to help build a comprehensive set of soft and critical thinking skills that would serve clients even after they’ve graduated. Apart from 1-2-1 support from a dedicated job developer, every cohort also has the opportunity to listen in on guest lectures from highly qualified professionals as well as being linked to a mentor currently working in the health informatics and digital health sector for current and relevant advice. After 4 weeks clients attend a culminating event that celebrates their hard work and commitment to the program. This also includes one final networking and Q&A session with a panel of 4 distinguished guests.

As of April 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program rapidly adopted a Remote Delivery Method (RDM), to effectively develop virtual webinars and materials to continue supporting clients in an interactive fashion despite the social distancing.

To learn more about the upcoming 10th Cohort that is to be delivered between 2nd-30th November or for further questions, please submit a request for Digital Health Careers to a service provider near you!

CompasstoConnect.ca
An IRCC funded website that connects newcomers with service providers across Peel and Halton

Is it time to focus on building a successful career in Canada for you?

If you answered yes, and you are a newcomer woman, you should submit a request for Career Pathways for Women!

Read the story of a recent participant of Career Pathways and how she landed a new opportunity working in her field soon after completing the two-week training.

Marina Morgan an internationally trained dentist, landed in Canada on May 11, 2020. To support her search for employment in the dental field, she was referred to the Career Pathways for Women program from a Settlement Counsellor at TCET’s Newcomer Information Centre.

Marina needed to gain an understanding of the Canadian workplace culture, how to market herself to employers, and she wanted to learn about the interview process. Her job search needs were met by the materials covered in the workshops including two individual coaching sessions with a Workplace Development Coach.

The coaching sessions involved exploring the job bank and occupational profile for her area of interest, as well as a mock interview session so that she would be successful in future job interviews.

Marina secured full-time employment as a Dental Receptionist starting on June 29, 2020. The job search training and coaching sessions worked.  Marina was able to confidently negotiate her pay rate from exposure to the job bank occupational information, and she was well prepared for the interview due to the high level of support from her Coach. Although Marina is no longer a practicing dentist, she is very happy to be working in an alternative career within her field, helping her attain her career goals in Canada.
